Petroleum Pipeline Company (BOTAS) is a State Owned Enterprise of Republic of Turkey and listed as the biggest company of Turkey in Fortune 500 in 2016. Baris Altiok Architects is honored to have the chance to work on this exciting and challenging adaptive reuse project with BOTAS.
The challenge was to convert the existing workshop building into an office building for Technical Safety and Security Services Directorate in Ceyhan Terminal.
On the exterior and interior faces of the building we wanted to bring out the original color of the brick and concrete, which add a lot of character to the building. We also designed larger window openings where we can for allowing more light into the office spaces. By adding aluminum horizontal shelves and vertical fins around windows, we aimed to control the light and glare. Choosing wood panels on the interior surfaces adds warmth to the office space without losing on the industrial character and using steel mesh helps emphasizing this character . One of the most critical spaces was the existing workshop area with the ceiling crane. We designed an office hanging from the ceiling crane beams, which span between the corbels of the columns, and tied the office mass with a bridge to the second floor of the building. This move allows the office mass float in the air.
Adapting and reusing the existing workshop building was a sustainable decision, but we also designed PV panels covering the existing roof and electrical charging stations at car ports which helps us reduce the carbon footprint.
